Work From Home - Advantages and The Disadvantages

Why work from home? The reasons why people choose to work from home are as diverse as the ways they choose to earn their money.

A first analysis of the motives for earning money from home may point to ultimate success or failure. If for example, the prime motive for working at home is so that you can have more free times, that any this could point to a lack of the self-discipline that any self-employed person needs by the spadeful.

Typical reasons why people work from home are:

- They have small children, need some extra income, but do not wish to leave the home to work
- They have no means of transport and commuting to work would be difficult
- They have an illness which, although it does not totally disable them, restricts the number of hours they can work or gives them 'good' days and 'bad' days
- They have skills that can be easily practised from home, for example book-keeping or dressmaking

There are many advantages to working from home, depending upon your chosen occupation and your personality:

- It is cheap
- There are tax benefits
- It saves time
- It is flexible
- It is comfortable
- You see more of your family
- You can have family support
- You can work at your own pace

The disadvantages:

- Restrictions (There could be restrictions that prevent you from using your home as a base for business)
- You may need planning permission (This is required if your home-based occupation changes the use of building, for example converting your living room into a tea shop)
- You may be to easily distracted at home (If the work that you are doing requires great concentration you may find working in a home unbearable)
- You may get lonely (If you do not have a family, or the family are out at work all day, you may find the solitude of working at home unbearable)
- Working for someone else can sometimes mean boring and poorly paid work

Once you have analysed your motives for working from home and weighed up the advantages and disadvantages, you are halfway to preparing yourself for fruitful satisfying working life. Every business should work out a business plan before starting up to make sure that possible eventuality is covered in its scheme of operation for the first few years. Choose your line of work, then do your market research.
