Having spent 8 years in a traditional MLM business, I saw many hundreds of people quit the business, most of them after a relatively short period of time.
I became very intrigued why there should be such a 'mass-exodus' when it was great company with great products. I spoke to as many of the leaders in the business, as I could and asked them all the same question - "What is the No.1 reason why people quit?" The answer was pretty unanimous - "Because they don't have a big enough reason for sticking it out especially when the going gets tough, they simply don't have a big enough WHY."
It got me thinking. Perhaps that was my problem, perhaps I was focussed on the material rewards, was that Aston Martin DB9 really going to make me happy beyond belief or at the end of the day would I be happy with a more typical family car that would reliably get me from A to B?? What about the 5-bedroomed country home, the Spanish Villa, the Motor Launch moored on the River Thames, etc, etc - were these the priorities in my life that were going to guarantee my long-term happiness?
OF COURSE NOT - none of those things were going to convince me to stick at my business through thick & thin when I was on the verge of quitting. There were always less glamorous but suitably adequate alternatives that would have served the same purpose.
It is Vital to Know Your Why
You have to ask yourself - what is the most important part of my life, who are the most important people, what achievements would REALLY change my life, what would bring the greatest happiness, what would bring the greatest rewards - I certainly don't mean financial rewards here, money on it's own will not make you happy. What values do you live your life by, what is your purpose - so many questions which you need to consider in order to identify 'Your WHY', it is not a matter of plucking something out of the air and saying "that'll do for now."
Spend as much time as you need to on this - it is vital to your success in business and more importantly, in life.
My Family are the most important part of my life - my gorgeous wife, my 4 beautiful children and my wonderful parents will always come first. I want to always be around for my young children, to give them breakfast in the morning, to take them to school, be there when they come home, help with the homework and be there to kiss them goodnight. I want to create a loving and fun environment where we can spend quality time together as a family and Karen & I can always be there as the children grow and develop and in turn, help them to create exactly the sort of life they want for themselves.
As children we were always dreamimg of what we wanted the future to bring us and truly believed that our dreams would come true. As we grew up other people forced their opinions, experiences and fears on us and we (sort of) embraced these as the reality of what the future would actually bring - we stopped dreaming of something better, stopped looking for the opportunity that would build a financial wall around our families that nothing could penetrate. Instead we decided to settle for a life of mediocrity and aimed to 'survive as best we could'.
How sad that is - where we are in our lives right now is the result of our previous thoughts and actions. If you are truly happy with your life, that's great. If not NOW is the time to draw a line in the sand, stop looking back, change the way you think about the future and what you want, decide on your WHY, and start taking the appropriate actions that will create the sort of life for you and your family that most people only ever dream about.
